The capital city of the Northern Territory, Darwin is a small yet cosmopolitan city and is situated on the Timor Sea in north central Australia. The city is famed for its relaxed lifestyle and unique multicultural attitude, with people from over 50 different cultures living and working together. Getting around Darwin is best done on wheels, with lots of the attractions fairly spaced out; public bus links are available but tend to only run frequently in the inner city. The city was the only one of Australia’s capitals to take heavy damage during the war and this is reflected in the city’s historical landmarks and points of interest. War history buffs in particular will enjoy the Darwin Wharf Precinct with memorials and landmarks and the Adelaide River War Cemetery while the Fannie Bay Gaol and Browns Mart are impressive examples of historic Darwin. Families visiting Darwin have plenty of places to explore such as the lush Bicentennial Park and Lake Alexander, open to swimmers. In addition to lovely green areas there are exciting attractions to attend including Aquascene; where you can feed some impressive fish by hand depending on the tide, Crocodylus Park; home to more than 1000 crocs and other residents such as big cats and exotic birds and the extremely popular Territory Wildlife Park; where you can stand nose-to-nose with a 3.7m saltwater crocodile!
