The capital of the state of Bahia in Brazil, Salvador is famed for its world heritage site of the Old Town, the vibrant, musical scene and its unmissable carnival celebrations; it is also considered one of the birthplaces of Brazilian culture. The city is the third largest in Brazil, borders the Atlantic Ocean and due its tropical climate is set amongst lush green rainforests and vast vegetation. Due to the cliff that runs along the entire Bay Shore, the city is split into Cidade Alta on the top of the cliff and Cidade Baixa down on the bay. Up on the cliff you’ll discover Palourinho, the old town that is made up of historical sites, colonial architecture, museums, restaurants, bars, hostels and quaint boutiques set along traditional winding cobblestone streets, while in the bay is the commercial centre. Travelling between the two should only be done using the Elevador Lacerdo, as it is very cheap and will save travellers running into any trouble on the interconnecting streets. Further attractions in Salvador include Igreja de São Francisco; one of the most important barraco style churches in the world, a handful of lovely beaches with warm waters and soft sandy expanses, the many shopping malls; in which you can find almost everything for a very low price and Largo do Pelourinho; a fairly small plaza that is one of the oldest places in the town.
