St Martin is an island split between the French region of Saint Martin and the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten and is the smallest land mass divided between two countries. Marigot is the capital of the French side, with Philipsburg hailing as capital for the Dutch area, and there is no official border between the two territories so travelling over the island is easy. There are a few touristy activities on the island including the stunning butterfly farm, walk freely through a netted enclosure while being swarmed by hundreds of colourful butterflies and the underwater marine reserve in Orient Bay, a great place for snorkelling and other water sports. The biggest attraction to St Martin are the beaches, there are thirty-seven in total across the island and while the water is slightly better towards the Dutch half, all are beautiful relaxation spots and there are plenty of beach front amenities and activities to keep all amused. Often bordering the beaches are the touristy beach bars and cafes and while offering classic refreshments and frozen cocktails, you can sit down for some surprisingly delicious European and Caribbean cuisine. The most famous beach on the island is Maho Bay on the Dutch side, the beach is situated at the end of the airport runway so large landing aircrafts fly mere feet from the beach, however it is recommended that you do not stray too near the airport boundary when aircrafts are departing, due to gravel and debris that is kicked up.
