Thought to be the oldest city of Cyprus and with evidence of habitation dating up to 6000 years ago, Larnaca is steeped in historical culture. Two central museums retell the history of Larnaca and exhibitions include the remains of five temples that once stood proud in the city and also the Cyclopean Walls, the museums are a delight and are considered must-sees to travellers visiting the city. For an equally inspiring day trip, visit the Church of St Lazarus, an orthodox church that dates back to the 9th century and is thought to be built around the tomb of Lazarus, Mary’s brother. For sunbathers, the seafront is the modern part of the city and is home to a stunning stretch of golden sand and the promenade that borders the waterfront features all the amenities to keep you occupied for a day at the beach. Just down from there is the Marina, it makes for a wonderful peaceful stroll and is home to some magnificent boats. The Larnaca Salt Lake is to the west of town and in the months of November to March you’ll see flocks of pink flamingos, out of these months the Salt Lake is still inspiringly stunning and there is plenty of other exotic wildlife around. On the western bank of the Salt Lake you’ll see the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, an ancient Muslim temple that is rumoured to hold the tomb of Mohammad’s foster mother.
