Brno stands as the second largest city in the Czech Republic, mostly undiscovered by the usual tourists, it’s quieter than and not as overpriced as its popular neighbours. The cultural hub of the historical region of Moravian, there is an expanse of theatres, galleries and museums to discover. Start in the Freedom Square, lined with clubs, bars, lounges and restaurants to spend the evening; you are never far from an inspiring piece of history. From here take a walk to the oldest theatre in central Europe, the Reduta Theatre, or visit the first theatre in Europe to be lit by the light bulb, the Mahen Theatre. Open air attractions popular with families are the magical Denis Park, with views of the Spilberk Castle and cathedral, and Brno Zoo, open daily with over 100 residents. Brno is also home to the second largest ossuary in Europe, found under the beautiful gothic church of St James; it leads off into a labyrinth of cellars referred to as Brno Underground. For an architectural treat, wander down Veveri Street, bordered by expansive Art Nouveau buildings and baroque inspired masterpieces, from here you can explore one of Brno’s three botanical gardens.
