Venice is a lagoon situated city in northeast Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. The city is almost identical to how it looked 600 years ago and is considered one of the most lovely and interesting places to visit in the world.
Being a pedestrian only city, it is easily navigated on foot and the absence of noisy traffic adds to the tranquil atmosphere. Aside from walking the most famous way of travelling round the city is by Vaporetti (waterbus) or by water taxi, and for a traditional Italian romantic experience, take a gondola ride. A Vaporetti ride at sunset is greatly recommended as you are surrounded by great sites and amazing architecture and the soft warm light highlights the fascinating Venetian watercraft that borders the canals. Sights not to be missed in Venice include the Doge’s Palace, the Bell Tower of St Mark; dating back to 1912, the Astronomical Clock Tower; best viewed by guided tour, the guild house of Scuola grande di San Rocco; a wonderful example of Mannerist art and the Jewish Ghetto of Venice; home to five synagogues and a lovely collection of shops and restaurants.
When you’re not sightseeing or drifting lazily down the canal, explore the classic Venetian shops for some beautiful Italian made goods such as carnival masks, glass and marbled paper and you must try some traditional made Italian food paired with sitting out the square under the warm sunshine and watching the world go by, it is a wholesome experience.
