The capital of the most populated country in the world, Beijing is also China’s second largest city after Shanghai. Beijing is the political, educational and cultural centre of the country and was the seat of the Ming and Qing dynasty emperors until the formation of a republic in 1911. Beijing’s most important landmark, found in the centre of the city, is Tiananmen Square in the Dongcheng district. Standing as the world’s largest public square, it boasts the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and the Monument of the People’s Martyrs in the square and surrounding the area are several grand buildings including the Great Hall of People, the Qianmen Gate and the Forbidden City.
