While formally part of China, Hong Kong is secluded by mainland China as its own dependency and lays out its own laws, separate immigration controls, financial system and is officially bi-lingual, with Cantonese and English recognised. Translating from Cantonese as “Fragrant Harbour”, Hong Kong s one of the most important hubs in East Asia with connections to many of the world’s capitals. It is a unique destination that excites and enlightens all who travel there and proudly proclaims itself to be Asia’s World City. Although not the largest part of the territory, Hong Kong Island is what lends its name to the region and is the place tourists consider the main focus. There is plenty to see and do in Hong Kong, from the exciting Chinese festivals to the beautiful traditional heritage locations throughout the territory. All of Hong Kong is considered very safe to explore and while common sense should still apply, it is a lovely way to experience the true culture of the region, by simply wandering and observing. For cultural travellers there are a variety of museums throughout Hong Kong and a particular favourite is the Hong Kong Museum of History in Kowloon, which gives a fascination and excellent overview of Hong Kong’s history. For families visiting the region, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is found on Lantau Island and there are a plethora of lovely beaches, swimming pools and an Ocean Park on the southern side of Hong Kong Island.
