Capital of India, Delhi is also the home of executive, legislative and judiciary branches of the Government of India. Delhi is one of the oldest existing cities, approximately 5,000 years old and is thought in the last millennia to have been destroyed and rebuilt no fewer than eleven times. Getting around Delhi is best done using the metro; it’s cheap, clean and efficient and travels around most if not all of the city. The Government of India Tourist Office is a good place to start your city journey, the staff are friendly and there is lots of free information, they also offer daily tours round all of the major sights. Be aware of the private “tourist information’s” they tend to overcharge and aren’t nearly as helpful. One of the top sites to see in Delhi is the Red Fort, completed in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, this brilliant red sandstone building is fantastic to explore and the gardens are kept lush and beautiful all year round. Another top attraction is the UNESCO world heritage site of Humayun’s Tomb in South Delhi, the tomb is set in large, immaculately kept gardens and the building itself is vast and mostly made of red sandstone rather than the more popular white marble. Head round to the South Gate, the original royal entrance, and you’ll catch some lovely picture-postcard views. There are a further two UNESCO world heritage sites in Delhi, including the impressive Qutub Complex, in addition to a wide array of museums, monuments, spectacular religious buildings and peaceful green parks.
