Formally known as Bombay, Mumbai is the largest city in India and the capital of the Maharashtra state, it is also considered the commercial capital of the country and is one of the most important port cities. Mumbai is a bustling, diverse metropolis with a unique flair and the beat of life provides a sharp contrast to the rest of India. There is a lot to see when in Mumbai and most of the tourist sites can be found in South Mumbai in particular the British built city within the walls of Fort St George. In this area you’ll see some stunning examples of gothic, neo-classical and indo-saracenic styles of architecture and famous monuments such as; the Gateway of India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal Building, the Municipal Corporation and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sanghralaya (formally Prince of Wales museum). The city is also home to some of the most famous museums and art galleries in India and it’s worth visiting at least one, from the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Jghangir Art Gallery or the Kala Ghoda. While at first glance Mumbai may seem like a concrete jungle, there are plenty of lush green areas and a favourite is Sanjay Ghandi National Park which also boasts the ancient Kanheri Caves crafted out of the cliff side and dating back to 2,400 years. When you are done exploring and want to pick up some souvenirs, it is thoroughly recommended travellers explore the street markets, or for those who prefer modern shops, it is worth visiting Palladium or Inorbit Mall.
