The third largest city in Japan, Osaka is the central metropolis of the Kansai region and the largest of the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto trio. Osaka is a vast city with plenty to see and do and there are several travel cards for using public transport during your stay. The city’s best known sight is Osaka Castle, based in a scenic park; the castle features a museum and many locals visit to picnic in the grounds. Museums in the area popular with locals and travellers alike include the Osaka Science Museum, the Osaka Museum of History and the Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum. For cultural travellers the Sumiyoshi Shrine is a must see; dating back 1800 years, it is one of Japans oldest shrines with beautiful surroundings complete with a sacred bridge over a tranquil pond. Also worth visiting is the Shitennōji Temple, built in 593AD, the temple conveys the continental style of the 6th-7th century to the present. Shopping in Osaka can be done at the city’s most famous shopping district, Shinsaibashi, which comprises of a vast array of huge department stores or the more traditional Tenjinbashi-Suji Shopping Street, the longest straight and covered shopping arcade in Japan. When visiting Osaka, it is thoroughly recommended visitors try the local cuisines, weather in a hole-in-the-wall restaurant or from the street vendor’s carts that litter the area at nightfall, you won’t be disappointed.
