In northern Thailand, surrounded by striking mountains and scenic countryside, you’ll discover the city of Chiang Mai. There are more than 300 temples within the city and on its outskirts, featuring intricately decorated wood carvings, Naga stairways, Leonine and Angel Guardians, gilded umbrellas and pagodas laced with gold. Chiang Mai’s historical centre is the walled city; sections of the original wall still stand in the gates and corners, however structurally all that is left is the moat. Within the city walls you’ll find the 30 main temples, highly decorated and offering a mixture of Lanna Thai, Burmese, Sri Lanken and Mon architectural styles, they give an insight into the varied heritage of northern Thailand. Overlooking the city is the most revered temple; Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. Located on the slops on Mount Suthep, it can be reached by foot or by cable car, the views from the temple are spectacular and the temple itself shouldn’t be missed. Towards Ping River in the east you’ll find more cosmopolitan areas, the Thanon Chang Klan night bazaar is very popular for shopping and central for nightlife is Loi Kroh Road. From here you can easily reach Ratchadamneon Road, which offers a Sunday night walking street market from Thapae Gate to the popular Wat Phra Singh. When you need a break from temple touring, there are many art galleries and museums within the city that feature contemporary artwork from local Thai and Myanmar artists. Particularly popular with families are the Elephant Parks, all offering an insight into the life of a Thai Elephant and the Baanchang Elephant Park also offers overnight stays with entertainment by a campfire.
