Muscat is the capital of Oman and the largest city in the country and although the city is called Muscat, it is in fact three towns which have grown together over time, Muscat, Matrah and Ruwi. There are plenty of activities available in the city including but not limited to scuba diving, rock climbing, trekking, camel racing, turtle and dolphin watching and horseback riding, there is also a plethora of bazaars and supermarkets in the area to satisfy all sorts of shopping needs. When exploring the city the best place to start is Qasr Al Alam Street, home to two striking Forts, the Al Jalali Fort and the Al Mifani Fort, two old prisons with striking architecture. Also here is the beautiful Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace, guarded by the forts and the home of the country’s leader; although entering is prohibited, the entrance to the palace makes for wonderful photo opportunities. From here head to the waterfront in the Corniche Area to catch a cool sea breeze and pause in the waterside eateries for some cultural tea. Easily accessible from the seafront is the Mutrah Souk, a welcoming bazaar where you can bargain for typical Asian goods such as shawls, garments, nuts, spices and more.
Travellers should be aware that it is a Muslim location and anyone travelling to this destination should be respectful of local traditions, customs, laws and religions, specifically when visiting religious grounds.
