Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island of New Zealand; it is also the second largest city in population size in the country behind Auckland. The city is famed for being green and often takes the nickname “Garden City” due to the amount of trees growing amongst the streets. Christchurch is mostly flat and therefore the preferred method of transport is on foot or by bike, with lots of safe cycling lanes and when you’d like to see further than can be comfortably reached on foot there are excellent bus links throughout the city. Unfortunately Christchurch was struck by two earthquakes in 2011 and although restoration have taken place across most of the city, the Central Business District still has some “Red Zones” and some planning in advance before you travel is recommended. Areas of interest in Christchurch include the Christchurch Art Gallery; a distinctly modern building, the lush Botanical Gardens; 30 hectares of exotic and indigenous trees and plants scattered around the picturesque River Avon and the Ferryhead Heritage Park; a recreated Edwardian township with quaint attractions. Families visiting Christchurch have a multitude of activities to take part in from visiting such children’s favourites as the International Antarctic Centre and the Orana Wildlife Park to taking a relaxing, yet sight-filled, cruise down the River Avon.
