Bloemfontein is the judicial capital of South Africa, the capital of the Free State Province and also the birthplace of J.R.R Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings. The city is compact and surrounding by sprawling suburbs and most of the cities activities are based around the scenic Waterfront and the two main malls. There are a number of game reserves located around the city where you can spot some African wildlife, a particular favourite is Soetdoring Nature Reserve which has lions housed in a separate enclosure in the middle of the park and the rest of the park holds no dangerous animals so it can be safely explored on foot. To get up closer to the native wildlife, the City Zoo is located behind the Waterfront Shopping Mall and features a stuffed liger, which was bred in the zoo in the 1930’s; their specimen is also the world-record holder for being the largest ever living cat. There is plenty of history and culture to discover in Bloemfontein, from the Anglo Boer War Museum and National Museum to the Oliewenhuis Art Museum and the Presidency Museum, which is based in a beautiful tree-lined parade. When visiting Bloemfontein, take note that they eat early, and if you head out to dinner after 7:00pm you may be rushed through your meal, in addition to this, shops close Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday.
