The state of Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States of America and is made up of over nineteen volcanic islands, based over a geological hot spot in the Central Pacific. The island of Hawaii is nearly at the centre point of the North Pacific Ocean and is referred to as The Big Island, to stop confusion between the state and the island. The Big Island is made up of coffee and macadamia nut plantations, working ranches, national parks and beaches made up of white, black and even green sand. Hilo is the capital of the island and is found on the east coast, it makes a wonderful starting point as it is made up of amazing botanical gardens and impressive waterfalls. From here the Hawaii Volcanos National Park should definitely be visited, it is made up of five volcanos, and features Mauna Kea; the tallest mountain in the world from its base on the seafloor to the peak and Mauna Loa; the largest and most active volcano on the earth. Here you can take a simple land tour around the volcanos or for something different, fly over the peak of Mauna Loa in an open door aircraft to feel the heat that surges forward. The Big Island’s beaches are a tranquil environment made for relaxing, there are simple water sports available on the quieter stretches such as; surfing, scuba diving and snorkelling, while active travellers will prefer the touristy areas with opportunities such as jet skiing, parasailing and kayaking and the chance to swim with wild dolphins.
