Molokai is one of the eight major islands that make up the state of Hawaii and is a beautiful island with a lot of history. Most notable on the island is the Kalapapa National Historical Park, an area dedicated to preserving the memories and mistakes that were made in the past regarding residents with the leprosy disease. There is a guided tour that takes place round the area that will take you round points of interest and stunning scenery and you’ll be enlightened on the education given concerning the disease, however it does require a permit to enter which can be obtained on the island. Also worth visiting on the island is the Molokai Museum and Cultural History Centre, lots of history here with an old restored sugar factory at its core and the Phallic Rock; exactly what it sounds like with inspiring views from the trailhead. The easiest way to see the island is by car, and if you drive out to Halawa Valley you’ll discover two churches in excellent condition built by Saint Damien and further down the road, stop off for some breath taking sights. There is a lovely beach on the west side of the island, unfortunately the surf is quite rough and swimming is not recommended, nevertheless it is a lovely place for a sunset walk.
